SIMION & BACIU represented at the International IP Enforcement Summit 2023

June 2023

The 2023 edition of the International IP Enforcement Summit, event co-organized by  EUIPO – European Union Intellectual Property Office , European Commision and Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria was centered on the theme of “Fighting IP Crime Globally“.

We consider that remaining attuned to trends and available solutions, while engaging in substantial conversations on this topic, adds value to us as professionals and to the overall interaction we have with clients and business partners and the business community, at large.

In this spirit, Ileana Niculescu, Senior Associate with the Dispute Resolution practice of SIMION & BACIU attended this well-rounded event. The key takeaways shared by Ileana, following the two-day gathering focused on the discussion for a robust response against intellectual property crime, include highlight such as:

  • In a nutshell, the infringement issue is not a new one. But it remains a constant and defiant challenge, given the ever-increasing sophistication and number of infringers. That is why, all prevention and response measures require a multifaceted approach that combines proactive measures, enforcement strategies, and collaborative efforts.
  • On how to actually address this challenge, the focus was on leveraging advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, to keep pace with technological advancements and emerging forms of infringement. The discussions on the EBSI-ELSA Blockathon Infrastructure were particularly interesting.
  • It remains a priority to educate individuals, businesses, and organizations about the benefits of innovation and creativity and, on the other hand, the consequences of IP infringement.
Furthermore, allocating adequate resources and support, on both financial and substantial aspects, for the IP rights holders and law enforcement agencies is crucial to ensure effective enforcement, protection, and defense of intellectual property rights, as the battle with infringers is a costly, time-consuming and never-ending one.
  • By fostering partnerships and dialogue among governments, industry associations, private entities and IP rights holders and sharing the knowledge on the best practices and resources, the battle with infringers should become more effective and the protection of creativity should prevail.

These conclusions reinforce our integrated consultancy-litigation approach at SIMION & BACIU, approach that we take while managing infringement-related cases for our clients.
